The Late President of the United States of America John F. Kennedy once said “ Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” This is the exact question a beauty ambassador (like me) would ask. What can I do for The Commonwealth of The Bahamas? My answer is simply to represent my country as Patriotic Ambassador of beauty, intelligence and elegance. Remembering that as a beauty ambassador for my country, there is no ‘I’ in the job description or subject line, but a ‘We’- because I am representing the face of every Bahamian woman from every island of this great country. To show the world that Bahamian Women are among the world’s most beautiful and intelligent beings. Also, to portray my leadership qualities at all times-humility, confidence, determination, character, morals, courage, outgoingness, outspoken, experience and most of all my warm smile. Being Miss Bahamas Universe has always been my passion, heart’s desire, my dream…something that I eat, sleep, breathe, and prayed for. To one day follow in the foot steps of former Miss Bahamas Universe beauty ambassadors such as Linda Smith- Holowesko, Ava Burke-Thompson, Nikera Simms-Symonette, and Raquel Simone Horton, (just to name a few), who reached beyond the sky. Just like them I want to taste this experience of a lifetime and to use this title to bring about change for the better of our country. I know through Christ all things are possible…and this dream of being Miss Bahamas Universe 2009 and representing The Bahamas on the world’s stage can be a reality because the “the power of a dream lies within the strength of the dreamer”.

Interview with Aquelle Plakaris

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE MISS BAHAMAS UNIVERSE COMPETITION?
I entered the Miss Bahamas Universe competition with a view to being crowned the winner.  As the next Miss Bahamas Universe, this would be an experience of a lifetime and I certainly would have achieved one of my many goals.  As a little girl growing up, I always played dress up in my mother's clothing, jewelry and heels (which were big for me). I would walk around in the living room pretending to be Miss Bahamas and would put on a show for my family. I also recall myself telling them "I will be Miss Bahamas one day" and now the opportunity is here and its time for me to seize it.

IF YOU WERE TO BECOME MISS BAHAMAS 2009, WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST THING THAT YOU WOULD DO?
As Miss Bahamas Universe 2009 the first thing I would do is begin work on my platform "HIV/AIDS AWARENESS".  To partner with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Social Services to spread the message around The Bahamas about the awareness, prevention and control of the diseases HIV/AIDS and STD's. One of my main goals would be to visit all the schools in The Bahamas speaking to the young people of our country about my platform.  In addition, I find it most fitting to host seminars to educate and inform the communities of The Bahamas about this disease and help those who may be at risk.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL THING THAT HAS HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE?
The most unusual thing that has happened to me was while riding on the train in Atlanta.  A homeless man approached me and asked if I had a pen that he can burrow.  I gave him the pen and within ten minutes I was quite surprised when he told me that he wasn't actually homeless; instead it was a group of classmates from his college that were conducting an experiment to see how persons reacted to homeless people.  He told me that I was the first person that did not ignore him and to gave him the pen.

DO YOU THINK THE SWIMSUIT CONTEST AT BEAUTY PAGEANTS DEGRADES WOMEN?
I don't think it degrades women, once it is worn modestly and it is a requirement for a pageant to showcase your physical fitness. I think one should abide by the rules and regulations of a pageant system whose requirements include such categories that are judged.

GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR NATIONAL COSTUME WILL BE AND WHAT DOES IT REPRESENTS?
My national costume was designed by jewelry & fashion designer Titus of Atlanta, Georgia.  It was inspired by Atlantis’ depiction of the lost world of Atlantis where the sun shone brightly over the soft white sandy beaches adorned by tropical blue waters.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AS MISS BAHAMAS 2009?
1. Spread the messages of public awareness and control of sexual transmitted diseases and HIV/Aids.

2. To start a MBU foundation for children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as form an after school program that educates children and young adults on social and health issues facing society.  This would allow training and awareness programs to be initiated so that our present and upcoming generations could be effective ambassadors who are equipped with power and knowledge to spread the message of awareness.

3. To do my endeavor best to be the first Bahamian to secure the title ‘Miss Universe‘.

IF YOU HAD TO RESIDE ON ONE OF THE FAMILY ISLANDS IN THE BAHAMAS, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Every island in The Bahamas has its uniqueness, but over all of them I choose Long Island...it was where my mother was born and grew up.  I have fond memories of Long Island where every year I enjoyed my summer vacations with a BLAST! My family heritage is embedded in Long Island and so for me being there is like a second home. I enjoyed the smooth flat sandy shores and the cleanliness of the crystal clear waters surrounded by clean, refreshing breeze.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR AND WHY?
Blue! All shades of blue...it is my favorite color because it reminds me of so many beautiful things in life. Like the waters of The Bahamas, the sky, and the national flag of the Bahamas...the color blue is also relaxing and I think it compliments my skin tone.

TELL VIEWERS A LITTLE ABOUT THE BAHAMAS AND WHY YOU LOVE IT SO!
Trees dancing in the sun to the beat of the goat skin drum and the sound of the ocean  taking its bow as it rolls on and off the white sandy shores  leaving treasures of sea shells  from  its depths behind. Doesn’t it sound like paradise to you? Indeed it is paradise, the 700 islands and cays  of The Bahamas!  I love The Bahamas because it is not only rich in sun, sand and sea, but in history and culture. Once inhabited by its first owners the Arawaks, The Bahamas was then discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Junkanoo season is my favorite time of the year because of the bond the people share, the colorful costumes and the beat of the drum that sends a message to the soul urging you to get up and dance. But what I like most about my country is the warmth and love felt  from the Bahamian people.
