Interview with Aisha Delaney

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE MISS BAHAMAS UNIVERSE COMPETITION?
The opportunities to travel and represent the Bahamas are just two of the reasons why I have entered the Miss Bahamas Universe Competition. Taking advantage of such opportunities will afford me the honour of becoming the Ambassador for my country, the Bahamas that I have always wanted to be. The mere thought of being a part of this pageant humbles me.  A diplomat, like a leader, must first learn to serve. As Miss Universe, I will serve and represent not only my country but also the world’s most natural resource, our youths.

IF YOU WERE TO BECOME MISS BAHAMAS 2009, WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST THING THAT YOU WOULD DO?
Cry; leave and eat!!! I would meet with the Ministry of Education and all interested parties with a view to implementing and conducting seminars that will focus on the needs of special children. Each child comes into the world with a special gift. The challenge is to recognize such gifts and learn how to deal with each special gift. If we learn to approach each gift and each child as a unique gift, the child’s sense of identity will be enhanced while his level of self esteem will be increased as will the child’s self worth. As we are all special individuals, so is that most precious resource, the child…the special child.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL THING THAT HAS HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE?
Standing in the middle of the ocean! I literally stood in the middle of the ocean while in Exuma a few weeks ago. One might ask, “How in the world was that possible?” From my experience, I can say not only was it possible but it still is. At this present time, I can’t recall exactly which part of Exuma but there is a sand bank that is visible during low tide. My fellow competitors and I were taken to this bank on a boat driven by a captain. Once we got to the bank, we got out of the boat and walked on the bank and then I looked around while standing on the bank. The sight was fascinatingly gorgeous. It reminded me of St. Peter walking on water.

DO YOU THINK THE SWIMSUIT CONTEST AT BEAUTY PAGEANTS DEGRADES WOMEN?
No. However, let’s face it. This is a beauty contest and the first aspect that is seen and perceived (though some of us may hate to admit it) is physical beauty, never mind that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Look at the 17 of us. We have placed ours bodies through weeks and months of exercise and for what? The answer is simple so that people may see our defined bodies. Whether this is degrading is a matter of individual perception and choice.

GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR NATIONAL COSTUME WILL BE AND WHAT DOES IT REPRESENTS?
My national costume will depict everything I love about the Bahamas. I am very excited about my costume. However, I am keeping the idea a mystery for now and at the appropriate, all will be very surprised.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AS MISS BAHAMAS 2009?

  1. Make us aware of the need for specially trained educators in the field of special children.
  2. To work with the Ministry of Tourism with a view to assisting in the hosting of the Miss Universe Contestants and the Miss Universe Pageant as well as providing for the systematic presentation of future pageants
  3. Educate young persons on the dangers of sex. Given the alarming statistics of young persons’ involvement in sex, sex education is vital and in this area ignorance is not bliss. It is dangerous. For those young persons who are not engaged in sex, the ideal thing would be to abstain until marriage.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR AND WHY?
I would have to say Black. Black is sexy and sophisticated; it’s mysterious; it’s slimming. Black is a colour for all occasions…it’s stately. Black also denotes strength.

IF YOU HAD TO RESIDE ON ONE OF THE FAMILY ISLANDS IN THE BAHAMAS, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Acklins. Despite the fact that it is not developed to the degree that other Islands of the Bahamas have been, Acklins would have to be my choice because of its old world beauty and charm. Its quiet beauty and charm tranquilize the mind while demanding the body to slow down and relax.

TELL VIEWERS A LITTLE ABOUT THE BAHAMAS AND WHY YOU LOVE IT SO!
Of all the sights an American astronaut saw from space, he noted that the most beautiful of all were, “The bejeweled aquamarine waters of The Bahamas."
This just one of reasons why I love the Bahamas so much.
