As Miss Bahamas 2009 I would want to heighten the nation’s awareness of the social disease of child abuse, in particular sexual abuse and neglect. I would want to work very closely with the Bahamas Crisis Centre, the Ministry of Education and the Department of Social Services to go out and speak publicly to all age groupings affected by these social diseases. This covers an extremely wide area. I personally believe that child neglect is the number one reason for our social problems today. Parents today are becoming younger and younger and have no sense of responsibility towards their children who are essentially left home to raise themselves. Needless to say, I will give special emphasis on family planning and contraception.
The second thing I would like to do as Miss Bahamas is to try to increase the government’s awareness of the plight of entertainers in our country. Bahamian culture is a very critical part of our tourist product which is unfortunately sadly lacking. In my opinion there is so much that can be done to alleviate this problem. I would like to be a public spokes person along with other sympathizers on this issue.
The third matter I would like to address as Miss Bahamas is the importance of self pride and keeping our country clean, green and pristine. I find it important for us to keep our surroundings clean and would love to be involved in speaking to the young and old to help them appreciate the importance of this issue. As the old saying goes “charity begins at home and ends abroad”.

Interview with Kiara Sherman

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE MISS BAHAMAS UNIVERSE COMPETITION?
I entered the Miss Bahamas Universe competition because it has always been a dream of mine to give myself the opportunity to someday represent my country at the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.  I believe that by having such a prestigious title, I would be in a better position to make a greater impact in my country and to help and inspire others.  While I  humbly believe that I do have the necessary qualities to fulfill the duties expected of the title holder, my greatest personal shortcoming is my shyness, and it is my hope that by entering the Miss Bahamas Universe Pageant, it would help me to overcome this emotional hurdle.

IF YOU WERE TO BECOME MISS BAHAMAS 2009, WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST THING THAT YOU WOULD DO?
Honestly if I were to become Miss Bahamas 2009, the first thing I probably would do is scream but I'm sure this is not the type of answer that you are seeking, so in reality the second thing I would do is to give God thanks for considering me worthy enough to win the title from amongst such a group of beautiful and intelligent women, anyone of whom could have easily won this title.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL THING THAT HAS HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE?
The most unique and unusual thing that has happened to me was my impulsive decision to jump on a plane and fly to Miami to participate in the auditions for the VH1 television program "Born to Diva".  Usually I am person who likes to plan my every move but on this occassion, I was totally out of character.  This was such a unique experience because firstly, I was the only non-American participant, secondly, I had to sing in front of so many big-named executives in the music industry, thirdly, it was aired internationally on the popular cable channel VH1, and last but not least, out of approximately 800 entrants, I made the top 5.  And as if that wasn't enough, the camera man caught me in a private moment crying to another contestant saying, "I want my mommy". Up to this day people still tease me about that".

DO YOU THINK THE SWIMSUIT CONTEST AT BEAUTY PAGEANTS DEGRADES WOMEN?
I absolutely do not feel as if the swimsuit contest at beauty pageants degrades women, I actually feel that it empowers women.  The ability of a woman to feel comfortable in her skin, and exude radiant confidence during a swimsuit contest says that this woman is ready to take on the world.  I also feel that the swimsuit contest will help to display her true poise, grace and self control.

GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR NATIONAL COSTUME WILL BE AND WHAT DOES IT REPRESENTS?
Well I don't want to spill all the beans just yet, but I will say that my national costume is a true representation of one the most continuous and visible forms of our culture.  The costume itself depicts tranquility, peace, strength and can not be found any where else in the world.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AS MISS BAHAMAS 2009?

IF YOU HAD TO RESIDE ON ONE OF THE FAMILY ISLANDS IN THE BAHAMAS, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
I treasure all of the family islands, but if I had to choose one to reside, I would have to say Grand Bahama and the reason for this is because of my family who lives in Freeport, Grand Bahama.  Family is very important to me and a large majority of my mother's family lives in Grand Bahama.  As a result of the distance between us, we are not able to have the same family interaction as if we all lived on the same island.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR AND WHY?
My favorite color is turquoise because it is a bright, vibrant, tropical color which tends to create an atmosphere of happiness, smiles and laughter.

TELL VIEWERS A LITTLE ABOUT THE BAHAMAS AND WHY YOU LOVE IT SO!
Most people already know about our crystal clear waters, white and pink powder-sandy beaches, tropical climate and kaleidoscope of colorful flowers.  Then there are others who know about our junkanoo, rake n’ scrape, and goombay.  What most people may not know about however are our sumptuous culinary delights.  I know that when I travel to a different country, the food is an important part of my enjoyment experience.  Nowhere else in the world can a visitor enjoy, guava duff, boiled fish, stewed conch, sheep tongue souse, conch salad just to name a few.  Finally, we Bahamians have an indomitable spirit which when experienced by any visitor, will guarantee that they will return.  These are the things that I love about my country.
